National Council
The National St John Council, appointed by the Governor General of Papua New Guinea, serves as the governing body of the National St John Ambulance (NStJA). The Council can consist of up to 12 voting members. Additionally, a constitutional office holder, such as the Chief Justice, Chief Magistrate, Chief of Defence Force, or Commissioner of Police, is traditionally appointed as a senior representative. Council members serve voluntarily for terms of three years, with the ability to apply for reappointment.
The Council provides strategic direction, governance, and oversight to ensure NStJA fulfils its functions as a statutory body. They set policies, monitor performance, and ensure legal compliance, while also overseeing financial management to use resources efficiently. Additionally, the Council advocates for NStJA, fostering relationships with other government entities and ensuring appropriate funding and resourcing.
